Poor spoilt brats can't cope with doing things for them selves and having freedom shocker! Best line: "Peter Mazloumian, another student who grew up in Dubai, was also overwhelmed by the new-found freedom and the openly available temptations of an illicit and scandalous nature".

I am still laughing at how pathetic they all sound.

Anyhow I have also met a no. of expats here who can't be "resocialised" anymore- so what to expect of their children who have been raised by housemaid from third world countries!

Similar things happen to students from smalltown Flangesbury when they move to London.

Except in the case fo students who were raised in the UAE, they've been told all their lives how westernised they are, and they are convinced that they have seen it all, living in a cosmopolitan city etc etc.

If you know you're a hick it isn't so bad...

'a what's what of cheap ‘student' drinks and Class C drugs; an eye-opening preview to student life in the UK; and a terrifying transition from a strict, sheltered, expatriate lifestyle'

Christ sounds BRILLIANT, whats the problem??

King Ell, I'd read all the posts before I read the link--I'd assumed these were local Dubai students, not darling expats. I always knew that on many levels "the real expatriate life" is a gross, glossy sham, but to spawn kids who by their own admission state that they've had everything handed to them on a silver platter...good grief.

An English friends 17 year old son who grew up here from age of nine went on a rugby tour to Ireland last year. He was shocked at what he saw...couples getting off with each other in the streets, people fighting and spewing in the street.
Another friends daughter went to university in London. Used her terms allowance up in five weeks as got taxis everywhere, never ate at home...even rang her brother asking where she could hire a cleaner from.
Kids have a very sheltered upbringing here, so it's not that surprising that they struggle when going to somewhere like the UK. I don't blame the kids - the parents should prepare them for life outside of the bubble.

and that's not as easy as it sounds...I mean, yeah, you can tell them all the time that life in Europe is different from what they experience here day in day out, but they just think 'whatever'...
We try and live a 'normal' life here, but still it's different. Back home they would no doubt cycle to their friends houses, here they go by taxi, simply cause their friends/schoolmates live all over Dubai, so they are used to going by taxi and don't necessarily view that as a 'luxury'.
We order take aways, simply cause it's cheap and every restaurant delivers, something that isn't done at all in the small town we lived in, so for them that is something normal, not some sort of extravaganza.
And even when we don't have a full time maid, most of their friends have, so again, it's a normal way of life for them.
So to say 'oh poor little rich kids' is a bit easy...you can do your best as a parent but they are still going to have to experience it for themselves first.
