"Shifting" when moving house, that's another annoying one.

"For a while"
A favourite of the Filipina secretary crowd when putting you on hold to transfer your call.

A couple of others that the press seem particularly keen on, not only in the Middle East:

Crackdown
Why is every attempt at doing the needful (sic) a crackdown?

Hike
Is every price rise so sudden and excessive?

Plying
A staple of the sub continental press where traveling or going might be better.

Yeah this I definitely agree with. So much media English is dire in Asia, especially the sub-continent. Prices are never increased, always "hiked". Things are never given but "doled out". Sometimes there is really bizarre and inappropriate use of semi-slang terms (or I guess an attempt to mimic tabloid English). As usual, in attempting to sound cool or hip they end up sounding ridiculous. But I guess we are not the target audience....

Sometimes it's plain illiteracy. I recall an article in Arabian News a few years ago - I think it was a silly pretentious restaurant review - that referred to the "magnanimous food". Despite several mocking comments under the online article, they never changed the original text.

Whenever I have been in India reading the English language newspapers, they are full of archaic english, words I have never heard of sometimes!

'Shifting' when used to describe the act of moving house

Words with an unnecessary 's' on the end such as the signs in a mall here that direct you to 'Parkings'

Would make quite a fun read if someone could put together a short story that was written using just these rather terrible words and terms.

That's been around in the sense you quote it since the C 15th. Perfectly legitimate use. Don't let the illiterati dumb you down.
