Sunderland must be one of the poorest cities in the UK and a prime target for wonga

And likewise Oxfam's African arm has seen its Tyneside revenue slashed by 50% since the new Sunderland shirt hit the streets. So that's half of f**k all then.

So what's the problem?

Exactly. The APR is completely irrelevant and totally misses the point as most of the Wonga loans only run for a week or so.

Banks on the other hand with their obscene unathorised overdraft fees are far worse. For instance, by going overdrawn by £200 for 10 days:

Our investigation found that customers of Lloyds, which is 41 per cent owned by the taxpayer, would face charges of £85.95 over ten days. This is made up of eight daily charges of £10, a £5 ‘usage fee’ and 95p interest. In total, these fees are equivalent to an APR of 46,450,869. An APR shows the full cost of borrowing if the pattern continued for a full year.”

That said, the MCB is right on this. Wonga and its ilk are nothing more than loansharks with high street branches and websites.

They are bringing it in through the back door - that's been happening for the last 20 years at least. The so called 'stealth-jihad" as it were is still jihad and is far more effective than the loony bombers we see on TV.
