Does Speed Alone Kill?

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
It's not your hands that are the issue....it's your mind being on the job.
Generally you use one hand to operate and use a phone....no different to driving with your arm on the window (legal and no real problem).
It's the use of a phone full-stop that is the problem as it occupies your mind.....I won't surprise me if hand-free kits are banned eventually as well. In 20 years we'll look back and wonder what we were thinking not only allowing hands free but also believing fully that it elliminated the risk!
We are slow learners.

The signs say 100 but the limit before you get flashed is 140kph, even through the Marina part of SZR.
So most people in the know, that ignore the incorrect signs would say that the fast lane is for speeds up to 140kph, therefore if you are doing 100kph in the fast lane and the slower lanes are clear, it would be nice if you moved over to let people who want to drive faster get passed.

The sign is not incorrect. The cameras simply go off at a higher limit as it needs to allow for descrepencies between peoples speedometers etc
Admitedly the descrepancy between the correct limit of 100 and the 140kph(really?) speed camera flash speed is too large although dubai police seem to be reducing the margins. But that's not the point - You seem to think the signs are all wrong and it's the cameras that determine the limits.
I agree however, that it is almost impossible not to speed in dubai. I drove at exactly the speed limit for an entire journey one day and every time I saw a change in speed sign i adjusted accordingly to the exact speed and honestly - it is more dangerous. My missus was telling me to speed up it was so dangerous in certain areas. Some signs are simply incorrect but that is not for you bison to determine and if everyone adjusted to the posted speed (regardless if it was correct or not) it would not have been the issue that it was that day.
If everyone did 100kph (where the signs say 100) on SZR it would be a lot better than some doing the limit of 100 and you doing 140 (because you're in the know).

Whatever the sign says is the legal limit and is correct (in the eyes of the law) and the camera flash speed is not the 'correct limt'.
I'm saying....as a person whos designs roads....that in some areas the speed limit is inappropriate to the environment and in my opinion 'incorrect'.
But as to your argument that all the road signs in dubai are wrong cause the cameras don't go off at those speeds is tosh.

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
Ive found recently since the introduction of the new cameras on both emirates road and al ain road that nearly all the traffic in every lane (trucks included although they shouldnt) sits at 120 which creates major nightmares when you need to enter or exit the road

Do you design roads in Dubai, if so you should be shot, having to go 10 miles to do a friggin U turn!

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
Seriously - imagine the chaos if left turns were allowed like they are in the real world at anything more than a minor road. It would be a) impossible to find a gap and b) a death wish.
By putting u-turns in, the u-turner only has conflict with one half of the dual carriageway - rahter than turning left over both directions of traffic.
The reason they are a certain distance apart (further on higher speed roads) is so that u-turners are collected to a safe area to u-turn. If we had u-turns every 200m the main road wouldn't flow.
Understand? Probably not.
Tell me where you live and i'll arrange to put in a left turn across a main road that hopefulyl would eliminate you (and hopefully not someone else)

I agree it's hard to exit when all the trucks are doing 0kph on the right hand side and it's unsafe to merge across them as you have to slow down so much and squeeze in.
But if everyone is doing 120kph is should be easy....you've got merge lanes 100's of meters long to get up to speed....and similarly with the deceleration lanes at exits.
Trouble occurs when numpties drive to the end of the acceleration lane and sit there waiting for a gap - a lot harder to do from a standing start than if doing the same speed as everyone else.
ANother issue is people speeding up to prevent merging....which also causes the parked car at the end of the acceleration lane.
It's driver behaviour that's the issue in this part of the world - indeed in all the world really but moreso here.

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
i totally disagree, i drive very well thank you better than some idiots on the road, like the expat woman driving a blue expedition who pulled into my lane and nearly crashed into me, (but because i am not afraid of making use of my horn to alert said stupid driver that there are others on the road as well, and indeed driving correctly at the traffic lights and using the correct lane to turn left from.......) and i am giving you warning that if i see you in the school yard or road again i am going to be having words with you.

Marvellous.
Bbee are you drawn to the light??
What is it about traffic lights that inspire you to drive correctly?
Roundabouts not do it for ya?

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
Been busy but will have my short say now:
SPEED KILLS!
If I throw a bullet at you as hard as I can and it hits you in the chest, will it kill you? Unlikely. If I fire said bullet from a rifle and hit you in the chest, will it kill you? Damn likely. The difference; the velocity of the bullet; ie: the speed!
No if, but or maybe!
If you hit a child at 30kph in a car, they have an 80% chance of surviving. Hit same child on same road with same car at 60kph, they have an 80% chance of dying. The difference; SPEED! No other factors.
Now you can say; that's a specific circumstance; but they all are!

But if you fired a bullet and nobody was standing in front of it nobody would be killed ie. bullet + person +speed +trigger puller etc. kill not speed.

Re: Does Speed Alone Kill?
no i like roundabouts as well, but there arent many in ab dabs, and the particular junction i am talking about is 19 and 30 and so have no choice but to go up to the traffic lights. and by the way i drive correctly around the ROUNDabouts (not straight across them) and use those little yellow things that people forget what they are for.
