I've always found it interesting how black people give themselves names in the UK and the US. It's like a vicious cycle.
But yes, certainly, I do discriminate, let alone judge, based on names. Dave is almost always disappointing and boring, this is a fact.

I can't believe none of you have commented on someone being called Cobweb, as a given name, not a nickname. Or Moth, or Jzero or alighla (pronounced ahlielah).

As to Cobweb et al--difficult to know what to say...
Oh, and if you go to Girders in JBR, ask the cute young English barmaid what her middle name is and why...

The names bit in Freakonomics is interesting--and, to a large extent, common sense (as, indeed, is most of Freakonomics).

It goes both ways, doesn't it? Some of you probably judge a person by his poncy name even before meeting him. I have a double barrelled surname and there were a few times it elicited a comments from people who didn't know me.
Unlike in the US where people assumed my parents were lefty feminists.

Re: Do you judge people by their names?
My first name is simply the name of Norsemen who settled in Northern France and then conquered lots of places because that's what Northern France does to any self-respecting Viking. My middle and family name are Saxon and I know their exact origin and meaning.
We judge people and it's not going to change any time soon. If someone has a silly name according to their cultural standards they will get flak...look up a Boy Named Sue by Jonny Cash. If enough silly names are given the culture changes. That's why my children are called Eric Bloodaxe, Gunnar Longbeard (she hates that) and Monkeyarse Jackseye...

I wouldn't say I judge people but yes absolutely I make assumptions of people.
I don't like my full name note why i have a shortened version which I feel represents me better, only my mum calls me the full version these days. For me it sounds posh and boring of which I hope i am neither. I don't like my middle name either, what you get being born in a year of the Queens jubilee!
In my experience any girl with a pouncy name that is kept as a pouncy name and not shortened is high maintenance, any boy with a pouncy name that is kept as a pouncy name and not shortened is an arrogant twat and guys named Steve are absolute shits (with a few exceptions).
...and Double barrell surnames mean your parents are either proper posh, or have illusions of grandeur.
... as for anyone giving their child a comedy name- such as Robin when your surname is Hood.. well it's just cruel unless your kid grows up to be uber cool, which they probably won't as they will have the piss ripped out of them at every opportunity.

Where I worked we used to have a patient come in regularly, and he was called Another Another. He was a bit of a down and out who just neglected himslef and they had to bath him as soon as he was admitted as he hadn't washed since the last time he was in hospital.
