"District 9" - anyone else seen it?
I'd love a second opinion. Deanlette dragged me off to see it at the Tunbridge Wells Odeon (I know, I know) last week. It's a South African production, but was financed by a Kiwi (Peter 'Lord Of The Rings' Jackson, mainly).
From a very irritating first ten minutes (newsreel-style interviews and reports highlighting the background story), it soon developed (for me at any rate) into a very good film indeed. Aliens in a squalid district in Johannesburg (the apartheid parallels are obvious but never dwelt on) who are subjected to an eviction order... the official leading the eviction team gets exposed to some sort of weird liquid, and starts to transform into one of the aliens.......... Genuinely gripping in many ways, and one of the most unusual films I've ever seen. Anyone? |

I heard it was based on a Scotch town
Such as Glenmorangie? By the way, the principal alien is not called 'Throog' or 'Nebulo' or something. He's called Christopher Johnson.............. |

Yup , likewise, the first ten or so mins are a bit distracting, but thought it was a great film, really enjoyed it.
Apparently, the director gave the lead part to his best mate, for no reason other than that, but thought he was great. |

An extremely disturbing movie...Took me a minimum of 24 hours to get myself back together...

So it's worth persevering with? I switched it off after about 8 mins. Those Saffer accents are grating though.

Didn't know what to expect, saw a poster, wanted to see a movie and didn't like/saw most of the other ones already so there I went. Almost walked out in the first 10 minutes, but stuck with it and wasn't dissapointed in the end  |

Yep, good movie! However, now that is a back-lash against it by Africans who claim it is detrimental to townships. Like, wtf can be positive about townships????
