Degrees and Phds

Have been contemplating doing a degree or something out here for a while but doesn't seem to be too much choice in Abu Dhabi for a UK recognised qualification. Driving into Dubai regularly would be a pain. Anyone any experience of doing a degree here either in local university or distance learning from Uk? Guess there is no option to obtain UK funding?

Have to laugh or despair at watching one of my company well educated translators sitting in an office everyday for the last few months taken off normal duties despite a shortage and being needed. Why? Because he is doing a Phd for a certain person who is not an ex-pat! Seems all the work and the original degree work has been done by others. Seems it is common practice. I won't say too much but this translator and his family are already reaping a number of financial and other benefits. What a con... and to think we will all be calling our guy Dr... soon and it's also worth a 6 figure bonus to achieve a pass.

The ou is worthwhile - I've done a masters with them. You need a UK address and technically you need to reside there but I've never had a difficulty. You send stuff every month some of the courses can take it on the internet - but my stuff was all maths and science - I don't know if other subjects are as easy. You really need to use the postal system though. Most of my tutors say they cannot accept couriers - presumably because they are stuffy twts who live alone down a lane and spend their days working in tescos or something.

I have done exams in DXB in Oman and UK - they can send the stuff out to the Brit Council who will supervise the exam.

I've just finished supervising a guy doing a PhD in chemistry from Texas State so if you are good on mass spectrometry I can supervise you too.
