Zinedine Zidane reckons Gerrard outclasses every other midfielder in the world........
Mind you, that Zidane............ decent passer, but no pace, too easily marked out of important games, with a ludicrously overrated reputation based entirely on a couple of opportunist goals in the 1998 WC Final........... if someone chipped the ball into the space behind him, he needed a tugboat to pull him round so he could chase it........

The Zidane Fan Club - founder member Alan Hansen - always focused on his 'good points' (of which I admit there are a few) but failed to acknowledge the tiny number of occasions he actually changed the course of an important match.
Anyone that can comfortably be man-marked out of a game by Carlton Palmer isn't all genius.
And that chronic lack of pace often let him down.
Lineker once compared him to Diego Maradona (the finest player, IMHO, the world has ever seen), which merely supported the theory that Lineker donated his brain to science about 15 years ago.

Always thought so.....

The was was amazing, truly amazing - he could create something out of nothing, score wonderful goals and his passing and trickery were unbelievable - for quite some time he was the best player in the world.

In an All-Time World XI, would he be in your midfield? Maradona, Platini, Cruyff, Charlton, Rijkaard, Edwards, Pele, Garrincha, Gullit, Zico.....

Quite a few - he basically made France tick.
He obviously didn't score the winning goals in the World Cup final and a champions league final (one of the best european final goals ever)
France obviously didn't fall apart without him in their side in 2002.
He obviously didn't score twice against England and help a poor French side to the Quarter finals (where they lost to the eventual winners)
In 2006 he obviously didn't score high pressure penalties in the semi or final, or ping in the free-kick that Henry scored the winner from against Brazil, and he definitely didn't score and get an assist against Spain in the second round.

We'll never agree on his worth. Great player? Yes up to a point, but as I said, how many games can you remember when he single-handedly turned a losing scoreline around? Or exerted such a strong influence that his team did so?
