I have certainly seen temperatures in the high fifties in Riyadh. The project was out on the edge of the desert and temps were recorded in the shade using some fairly decent equipment.

It was a lot more bearable though than lower temps in the gulf with higher humidity. I lasted at least 3 minutes outside before my sunglasses had burned their metal arms against my skin.

That why I posed it as a genuine question because it seems personal expereinces suggest the temp has been higher , even discounting a vehicle's onboard gauge.

Plus I recal article from few years back that temp were deliberately downplayed so that construction labourers will keep working, as there is some law or agreement that that they can quit working outside if temps hit 50 C.

So I really don't know and was curious on where the truth lies, but knowing the region I am always skeptical on what authorities say.

Whats officially recorded by the met guys will be the 'real' temperature because their reputations depend on it and they're very geeky.

I think this is true for Kuwait, but I'm not sure if the UAE has a similar law.

it will also be the exact real temperature at that exact spot and thus close to ****ing meaningless when it comes to anywhere else.

ie Al Ain frequently has temps above 50 as does Um Zammoul but no official met station means no official temps are recorded.

dont get me wrong I have no problem with the system but it is somewhat limited.

Qatar hit 50.4 °C officially, according to wiki back in 2010. I'm pretty sure the 'no working over 50 degrees' applies here too

Wouldn’t the issue be not what they do and can record, but what they are then allowed to report.

True. Seen on several sites in the UAE & Kuwait. We have had thermometers record over 50 on several occasion, however, for the over 5 rule to kick in it needs to be an official announcement.

Anybody who thinks this is bogus is just deluded!

Who needs a thermometer when you have your sunglasses as a trusty guide -stepped out of taxi yesterday to immediate steam up and silk top stuck to back - note to self - time for cotton only!!!!

Hot as Hell

"The sun was blazing in Seih Al Salem, around 25km to the south-west of Al Lisaili in Dubai. Here the maximum temperature goes up to 49.9 degrees Celcius in July, but on Tuesday it was 50.5 cegrees Celcius. It means the ground temperature was in the range of 53 degrees Celcius to 54 degrees Celcius."
