Default Darwin Award in Saudi

BBC

A high-voltage power line reportedly fell down and sent sparks flying after it was hit by celebratory gunfire.
I wonder whether they were cousins?

Unfortunately it sounds like the victims in this case were not the perpetrators. The women and children who appear to have been the main casualties would not have been at the same celebration as the men and would not have been letting off gunshots: that was most certainly done by the men...

At least 20 people were left dead and up to 30 others were wounded after being electrocuted at a wedding in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening, according to reports in the Gulf kingdom.

The incident is said to have occurred when a high voltage power line collapsed against a metal door on the building where the celebration was taking place, trapping guests inside. The line reportedly collapsed after being hit by stray bullets from celebratory gun fire.

In the National they're saying it was all women.

A fire sparked by celebratory gunfire has killed at least 25 people at a wedding in Saudi Arabia, media reported on Wednesday
Bullets struck electric decorations that triggered a short-circuit, igniting a women-only marquee at the wedding last night in Eastern Province, said Al Yaoum newspaper, citing civil defence chief General Abdullah Khsheiman.
Al Yaoum, which is based in the province, said at least 28 people died in the fire, although various other reports put the death toll at 25, all of them women and children.
The governor of the region, Prince Mohammed bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz, ordered a prompt investigation into the incident, the Okaz daily reported.
Only women and small children were in the tent in line with segregation rules in Saudi.
In July 1999, 76 people died in a similar incident in Eastern Province.

Definitely a potential Darwin winner!

Are these people so thick that they don't wonder what happens to the rounds that they fire off into the air? Even if it goes up supersonic it'll still come down at terminal velocity which will in the least tickle.

Apparently if you do it you should make sure you fire straight up rather than on an angle as it comes back down slower..... live and learn!

Straight up means straight back down. That doesn't sound so clever. WhyTF don't they just fire blanks? There again, that would be using common sense...

Why fire a weapon at all? Guns were designed to kill people so I have never understood why you'd want to discharge one at a wedding.

Innocent victims were killed. No Darwin Award. Although associating with the perpetrators - an any way at all, let alone marriage, might be grounds for a nomination. I know I'd want my head checked.
