Re: Could you afford to gamble ...
I bet near enough every weekend. Football mostly, although sometimes I do play in the live casino. Sometimes I am up, sometimes I am down. Generally I make more from the casino than from betting.
When I was a student I used to frequent the casino 3/4 times a week. I used to go in with a set budget and very rarely did I walk out with less. I once totted up I had made an additional £4k one year, which when you're a student buys a lot of beer!
The key issue, however, is only bet what you can afford. Have a set budget and stop / walk away when you reach it. Then take a break of a week or whatever. Done.
QPR and Norwich screwed me yesterday on 2 smallish accumulator, however, thankfully a different one came in and I won more than I had staked all day with still some bets pending. Happy days!
Watching a game with a few punts on is what make a weekend for me. They don't need to be mega bets, just a few quid here and there.

I won a friend $450 for a $20 bet 2 weeks ago, by telling him Wilshere was going to be the first scorer in the Arsenal game. I really wish i was betting myself now!

The UK lottery is just a tax on people who are bad at maths...

I think it's still gambling. From the history of gambling, it started from playing the game of chance. Lottery is a game of chance so it can be considered as gambling.

I wish I had stuck to the bookies to be honest this last few months.
Got into share dealing and now definitely down. I would class my gambling on that as worse than sticking a few quid on a horse or the footie.

The old man and I were laughed at when we bought shares in some of the major banks....when a couple of them doubled, we were the ones chuckling.

there have also been a few minor successes although I have been buying a few on the AIM and it really is the wild west there. I guess it is maybe that part of it that still has me checking all the time to see how they are doing! (the gambling buzz?)

good on you. Bought into RBS and Barclays a few months ago (RBS doing ok, BARC not so well) but only minor holdings.

We found it was key to have a blend of gambles and safer bets. We only really invested in things we thought we knew at least a little bit about (we held 3-4 construction company shares, including Rok when they were winning lots of work and sold just before they went pot...).
Pound-cost-averaging both up and down can be wise, but still a further gamble.
