Default Corona Skills

Afternoon all,

Has anyone used this supposed increase in free time to master any new skills?
Anyone brought in some good habits?

I'm trying to read more. I haven't started but will.
I've realised how much I enjoy a good puzzle and that will never change.
Millhouse has mastered swing-ball (classic game, much respect).
Anyone started baking bread or cakes or anything? (I'd like to do the bread one, maybe this weekend).
Anyone started anything else interesting?
Who can be an inspiration?

Or are we all just lying down in front of Netflix?

Great thread. My hopes of making some grounds on the piano have been dashed as I can't find anyone who can deliver one. Apparently they are not essential.

I'm working on a 1000 piece puzzle. Brilliant - several days in. Might get a large Meccano or lego set next.

Baked a carrot cake yesterday. I am actually a competent (but very impatient) baker - this means I tried to cut it too early and it broke up, so I have a great tasting cake that looks like it's been involved in a car crash. Chocolate eclairs once it's all been eaten.

If I can't get a piano ordered, I'll probably start putting new paintings over the old canvases.

I made a sourdough starter and have been baking bread with it. I also made sourdough hot cross buns last week which were delicious!

I'm now seconded to the state health department as part of the Covid response group working with logistics. I've never done logistics before so definitely a new skill.

The mrs wants a keyboard, I'm glad she never got one before this started to be fair. Although I guess you can use headphones.
1000 piece puzzle is the minimum, I've done a couple so far. There's a brand called Ravensburger that make good ones. I also enjoyed this one: link
I might start another one tonight, Mother brought a 7-in-1 box of 1000-piecers for my birthday...

I'm gonna give bread a go I think.

I'd love to bake a sourdough loaf but started reading on the starter and just thought this is too technical.

Good luck with the new role

You too? So has Mrs P! She has also been baking a cake every 4-5 days, so I have been practicing my cake-eating skills.

I have been working on a guitar kit I bought nearly two years ago, that I never quite got around to assembling. I am in the process of staining it, using a tung oil finish, and it will need a number of layers of urethane varnish on the top, but once I am done, and have the tuners, pick-ups, and strings installed, I will be learning to play it.

I am very jealous of that project.

Thx!

This is the guitar if you're interested. And the pieces have been manufactured to a very high tolerance with a nice snug neck joint and totally lined-up straight and true.

That sounds excellent. Mr Dorothy used to play guitar many moons ago. I may look into getting him a kit for his upcoming birthday.

I'm doing Arabic on the same app - still on the free version of course! Original intent was just to be able to read road signs etc but I'm a bit deeper in now. Other half is doing French. Which is useful so we can help each other. Some of the Arabic pronunciation is iffy and the course does need to be supplemented by some basic work, like practicing out the alphabet, so I'm fortunate to have some home tuition though I guess that could easily be found on the internet also. The linked tips and forums in the app are also fairly useful, if not essential, as many things are not explained. The new alphabet does give it a puzzle aspect. I tend now to try and decipher Arabic text that I see and it is rewarding when the squiggles start to become words though I'm still at a point where I have to go through a word character by character to figure it out.

If I finish this I'm planning on Spanish next where at least I have some foundation and can read the alphabet!

Obsessive gardening is the other thing that has taken over.
