Contented old gits. Your opportunity to celebrate the modern world.

Count your blessings...

My iPhone 4, allowing me to have access to my life at all times. (And bollox to the first person who says "Its a gadget, get a life." I HAVE a life, this just allows me to keep in touch with all of it all the time, if I so wish.)

Super-quick automatic gearboxes.

Webcams.

Cheap or near-free international phone calls.

Concept2.

Digital cameras.

How modern do you mean?

sk y pe - which we can leave disabled as much as we want - we're in control - and if necessary can always say that we can't access the site (not true)

email - see above

digital cameras - no more wasted money on lousy developed shots

decent TV - through an undisclosed but well known medium and being able to listen to various radio plays/quizzes from the UK

being able to pay bills on-line - not having to write a cheque, fill in the counterfoil, put it in an envelope and address said envelope, put a stamp on the envelope, go to the nearest post box and post it and then hope it arrives at it's destination

internet banking

air-conditioning

If you'd like to go back much further, then Mr H's grandfather had to guarantee the electricity company in his area the first quarter's takings to get them to put electricity into the village.

So, on that basis, I'd say electricity would be the number one on my list - nothing much runs without it, does it?

Torrents - without which I would be lost

Alpen - without which I would go hungry in the morning

Tinted moisturiser - I am blessed with good skin and don't want to trowel on foundation

tracability old chap, you can use peer blocker software to stop the network getting your IP address but its still not 100%. Also the vpn provider knows your real IP address also.

I suppose I all depends on the legality or not of what you are downloading

Normal everyday people still rely on torrents - only geeks know the new technology, and judging by the action on my utorrents, they are still real popular. As for knowing IP addresses - until the region overhauls its laws, I will download in safety thanks.

And on a final note - porn in marriage - ain't nothing but a good thing - you try keeping things spicy after a few years - it's hard work - that's if you're willing to make the effort in the first place.

I never had to make much of an effort. You get horny, you hump her, it's over and you stagger off for a drink and a fag. I did this on a regular clockwork basis.

I wasnt saying they were not popular  my point to the OP who didnt know torrents was not to bother now, as things seem to be moving away from them.

never been called a geek before  regarding the safety of downloads well I suppose I was just thinking of the legality aspect which is one thing, but the other side is the hacker element you are exposed to with torrents.

anyhow I can assure you I am no proponent of legality or morality in any shape or form

Re: Contented old gits. Your opportunity to celebrate the modern world.

In summing up, M'Lud...

Ok, so what can we deduce from the parallel threads of annoyance and contentment with the modern world?

 Mobiles are a good thing, except that we’re annoyed by people’s use of them.
 Especially IFAs and Event Organisers, for whom hanging, drawing and quartering is considered a nice way to go.
 Phone calls are cheap (which has the unfortunate side effect of not putting off the tossers mentioned above).
 All things “e-“ and wireless make our lives better, but again many people are inconsiderate in their use of them. Some of them aren’t easy to use, they don’t last long, and many people seem over-reliant on the social media aspects.
 Computers and the internet only make us happy (its people’s use of them that annoys).
 Other people’s shopping etiquette makes us mad.
 As does the general level of illiteracy and poor use of diction, especially among the youth and those who work in the airline industry (where the food is awful).
 Our illiterte youth are uninventive to boot.
 Automatic gearboxes have improved, and vacuums don’t need bags.
 We don’t need to go to the gym, or even outside, to get fit. And while we’re there, there’s a/c to keep us cool.
 TV is available on demand, but its still produces awful stuff like Farmville.
 DJs are crap.
 Meusli is available ready-mixed. But many menus are misleading.
 Our lips can be glossy and protected all day long, our bodies moisturised to the colour we want, and our manicures (and time) saved by the dishwasher.
 When we have a quickie we can be safely sterile, especially useful given the preponderence of liberated ladies.
 ATMs mean we’re not at the mercy of the banks’ hours, but we should use them more to avoid paying for rounds with plastic.
 Driving out here sucks, as does efficiency, toilet etiquette, queuing and pretty much everything else.
 Boasters, name-droppers and whingers leave us hot under the collar.
 As do those who bring us problems with no hint of a solution.
 Unsurprisingly, we continue to complain about the weather.
 And last but incomprehensibly, we’re glad to have ghds and trunk monkeys.

Well, that was worthwhile…
