Great documentary on the building of the Crossrail line.

Just amazed at the brains behind it and what is accomplished. To build a tunnel that is at 1 point only 35 cm below pilings of another established Underground line and at times just centimeters above a busy underground station.

Then there are the laser positional indicators installed on many London buildings to assess the changes caused from underground tunnelling. To counter sinking of central London buildings, several shafts are built in the area of the buildings with horizontal bore holes radiating from the shafts ; grout is pumped through the bore holes to areas of ground that have subsided.

This is one of my companies projects (design and supervision).

We had the project director in the Dubai office a few months ago and he gave us a presentation on it. As a ground engineering and tunneling guy this it was very interesting.

CRacking project. The elevations of the rises / falls in the tunnels are immense.

Watched the first two the other night. A good watch.

I do like the Britishness of them too. It's meant to be a proper BBC Doco and one guy is ripping scousers for being thieves all the way through it. Ha ha!

Speaking of thievery and British Railways: the 6 episode Documentary "Keeping Britain on Track" has episodes on copper cable thieves who strip Network Rail's electrical cabinets and cables.

Just 1 destroyed electrical cabinet was expected to cost over £100,000 to replace the electrical gear. The thieves only get pennies on the pound for the copper they stole. Apart from the cost, the trains are delayed or cancelled and safety is jeopardised.

Here's episode 2, there is a segment where the Transport Police hide and wait to catch copper thieves.
