Comments Heard in my Lifetime (paraphrased):
UK 1956: ‘Saudi has only enough oil to last for the next twenty years.’
Muscat, Oman 1976: ‘This place is finished, what’s it all for? It’s a mushroom city, it’s so plastic. They’re building on sand; it will all collapse in a few years. ’ Bahrain 1979: ‘This place is finished, it has no oil, once it loses its offshore banking monopoly it will collapse. ‘ Kuwait 1981: ‘This place is unreal’ (Had to agree with that one). Dubai 1972: Dubai Dry Docks. ‘Whaa…? How they gonna compete with Singapore. Who’s gonna use it? They must be crazy.’ Dubai 1977: Jebel Ali Port. ‘Whaa…? What’s wrong with the port they have now? It has more than enough capacity. Who’s gonna use it? They must be crazy.’ Dubai 1982: ‘This place is finished, what has it got besides gold-smuggling to India?’ Dubai 1982: ‘Golf course? Grass golf course? Whaa… are they crazy? How can you make a grass golf course in the middle of the desert? They’re wasting their money, it can’t be done. Dubai 1985; Jebel Ali Free Zone: ‘Whaaa.. ? ‘What company will set up there? Who’s gonna use it? They must be crazy.’ (Update - see also the cities: Humanitarian, Healthcare, Media, Automotive, Internet and Knowledge; the parks: Metal &Commodities, Gold&Diamond and Dubai Industrial and the oasis – Silicone). Japan 1990: ‘Bust, finished, it will never recover 1998: ‘Mahathir Mohamad? Didn’t he tell the IMF to “shove it” he’ll be sorry; Malaysia will never recover without outside help. 1998: ‘The Asian Tigers? overexposed, down the tube, finished.’ Today: Many comments similar to those preceding. We can flap our gums, Chicken Little (as a verb) and doomsay as much as we like, the Middle East and its environs will still be around when we are all long gone. Yes, we are in for harder times – It’s nothing through which many of us haven’t been before - many times. Those without the stomach for it will leave for places where they will feel more secure. A period of simple readjustment will ensue – Armageddon is still some way off. |

When the Hard Rock opened I was convinced it would go bust becuase it was nearly in Abu Dhabi!!! how wrong eh ! |

Yeah! Dubai Park Hotel was, for quite a few years, just a shell (victim of an economic slowdown) in the middle of nowhere; used to hash through it with the Dubai HHH quite often. It’s one of Mo. Bin Suleyam’s places – I heard Hard Rock has not had its liquor licence renewed due to the whole edifice coming down – any confirmation on this?
