I'm with you on this Patsy. Christmas is what you make it. To me it doesn't mean vile, cold weather and miserable people, but a day with friends and family having a nice time.

I love being able to walk on the beach on Christmas morning, although I spent many childhood Christmas in the tropics so it isn't about the cold. I think people have far too many expectations about Christmas which is why it is far too often a big disappointment.

I am rather hoping that I won'd end up cooking for a houseful again this year though...

I have spent years saying I would want to get away from Christmas at home- I find Christmas day with my family incredibly stressful- my coping mechanism is alcohol and I am normally pissed by 10am. So I have had two xmases away and have to admit they have been nice but it isnt the same. As much as my family do my head in (understatement) it is a day for family and loved ones even if its spent watching Mary Poppins, with everyone fighting and me being drunk- so this year i am going home- a surprise visit though so I cant be palmed off to visit all my old aunties so its just about my immediate close family and close friends. So I will be arriving with a bottle or 10 of champers and will crack it open as soon as I get through the door until I leave. And that is Christmas spirit!

I might try and give it a miss again next year though.

You seem to have got it absolutely right: Christmas is what you make it, the location is irrelevant, although a Christmas in a hotel in the old Soviet Union was a rather grim experience.

I have just remembered a rather rubbish Christmas in Cadiz, Spain a number of years ago. Nowhere was open on Christmas eve so the (soon to be binned) chap and I ended up an the oddest Chinese restaurant with a bunch of Russian sailors. By the end of the night I knew all the words to their songs.

Thankfully a few places were open the next afternoon and I spent a few hours scoffing delicious tapas and quaffing sherry in warm winter sunshine. Overall though, it is still the company that makes the day.

Don't know about Dubai but they do this in Abu Dhabi so they must do it over your way... some of the hotels do a Christmas Dinner box which you collect on Christmas Day. It includes Turkey, stuffing, veg, cranberry sauce etc etc etc even a proper carving knife. So you get Christmas dinner at home, but hotel quality and no effort.

Yeah we did that, AED 800 for a massive turkey, it was incredible.

It's because he watches TV with Spugsy. You know he's a massive fan of The Snowman, don't you? Watches it once a day in December.
