No. Apple CarPlay doesnt work with Google Maps. I got sick of Apple's petty restrictions and switched to Android a few weeks ago. Best thing I've ever done. Android is light years ahead of Apple in every regard. I honestly can't think of a single thing I miss about my iphone.
To be honest, the Ford sat nav maps are pretty good so I use that if I'm not sure and it's in Dubai. Google maps handy for the UK though.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong. As far as I understand once iOS12 is released the restriction on mapping will be lifted and Apple CarPlay will work with Waze and Google Maps.

I'm using IoS12 at the moment and Siri can now work with Google Maps so I'm assuming carplay will too.

Waze works excellent with carplay. You can continue playing music etc in the background also.
