Amstell on offer at BMMI for 13 bd a case if anyone likes it
Damn, really? Just planned a visit in first week of August (necessity, not choice). Will have to make it a quick in and out.

If polls are to be believed between 40%(ICM poll) and 60%(uncited polls) of Muslims in the UK want sharia law, at least in areas with Muslim majorities (enclaves in other words...).

There's a lot of westerners in my building - do you think the UAE would react well if we were polled and said we think Common Law should be introduced in our area?

So they would actually be thankful if you teased them? Surely this would be too much fun to refuse .

There was a good story earlier this week about a Malaysian woman who wanted to drop her religion and be prosecuted for something or other in a secular court (Malaysia runs both systems side-by-side so kind of has an involuntary double standard for its citizens).

Not allowed to change however, you need court permission to commit apostasy (and being born to a Muslim you are guilty by association). Not sure how the thought police enforce that law of course? People’s beliefs aren’t even their own choices really but more of a philosophical conclusion they reach.

I think you apartment complex would be rather full and rents would soar because the area would be seen as more desirable. Would be an interesting experiment though .

What's wrong with that? Perfectly logical.

Regarding your 2nd paragraph,
Standard answer from Emiratis = if you don't like it, go home.

'Course locals will say that as non citizens Westerners (or any other non local) have no right to expect anything, but ofcourse that boils down to how Arabs are loathe to hand out citizenship while Western countries are generally tolerant (relatively speaking) on granting citizenship.

I don't have specifics stats . What I said was gleaned from living in the region (AD) and reading about the region.

Western nations will accept refugees but how many wealthy Arab nations accept non Arab refugees? They don't even accept Muslim refugees!

Yeah but swapping one Islamic state for another is just about choosing the lesser of a few evils.

Surely if you had the right friends you could be made a citizen?

More importantly, like me, who pissed off the police, she wasn;t in court for 8 months - so that means they had her passport for that time.

There are already sharia courts in the UK, labour in their infinite wisdom helped set them up to resolve disputes over Islamic finance and issues they felt would be better dealt with under sharia. Unfortunately and inevitably they have widened their scope considerably and are now hearing cases for abuse, divorce etc. This is rapidly making a mockery of the justice system in the UK especially where womans rights are concerned as you'd expect human rights groups are a little concerned over more than a few rulings. Unfortunately the jinn is out of the bottle now so expect a major confrontation over the issue in the next few years.

I should point out that strictly speaking under UK law these courts have no legal standing at all but it appears that this hasn't stopped them or slowed down their growth in supposed powers in anyway
