You'd think with a worldwide recession there'd be 400 applicants for each job making cuts.

Like it used to be in France, the executioner job in Saudi is actually a family trade, involving a skill that is passed from one generation to another. The skill required in this job is extreme synchronization, otherwise it gets very messy. The guy to lose his head needs to relax, and one of the ways to accomplish this is to distract his attention. For example, the executioner would ask the guy a question, to get him to do some thinking and in a split second the job is done.

In France, the last execution by guillotine actually took place in Marseilles on September 1977, and the last guillotine executioner to die was Fernand Meyssonnier who died in 2008, check him out here

Saudi drugs the victim, do they not.
I read a news article some years back about the chief executioner. He did say the job was handed down but hisson didn't want it. He also mentioned he can't recall how many he beheaded but he sleeps well at night because it is the will of Allah and that he is doing god's work.
