You're too polite. A simple; "Insurance companies are pay-out dodging *****" normally explains accurately...

He asked "how?", not "why?"

My mistake.

Also, in this case, 'you' would be breaking the rules and therefore liable, so they're allowed to punish by not paying out.

Iggle: wake up and smell the coffee. You must have some understanding of how insurance works given what you do for a job. You may not have been involved in a major insurance claim, but when they happen you realise there are a lot of people in the insurance industry who are quite clever, and they earn decent money by saving their employers money.

Iggle takes out insurance for when he's back in UK as part of a hire car package, for a Ford Fiesta. Sensible choice (the car, not the insurance which is mandatory). Doesn't declare he's non-resident. One afternoon he skids on a patch of oil, and piles into a £100k Ferrari, writing off both vehicles and breaking the other driver's arm; total loss £150k. Loss adjuster to Iggle: "Where do you live?" "Milton Keynes." "How long have you lived there?" "6 years." "Do you have insurance on another vehicle?" "No." "Oh, how do you get to work?" "I don't need to answer that question?" "Ok. You declared on the hire car / insurance paperwork that you've had no accidents or convinctions in the past 3 years. I've looked you up on the insurance database, and found that the last time you had vehicle insurance was a year ago. Why did you stop?" "I don't drive." "What do you do for a job?" "Why do you need to know?" "Because on the form you put down QS, and to my understanding they usually do a fair amount of travelling. How do you manage that?" "That's not your business." "I think it might be..."

Get the drift?
