Car Insurance in UK

Hi,

We are travelling to the UK for a visit and wondered if anyone knows anything about insuring a car for us to use that doesn't belong to us.

Several years ago my father in law got us added to his insurance for the month we were there at a minimal cost, however apparently insurance companies no longer do this for expats/non residents...

He is happy for us to use his car as it mostly sits on the drive and it would save heaps in car hire.

Does anyone know of any companies that would insure us on his car for a short term period whilst visiting (or even know if it is possible?)?

Aviva offer short term insurance for cars not owned but I believe you need to have a permanent UK address

Yeah, guessing you're probably already on your trip, but standard UK car insurance policies all require you to be a full-time UK resident and you may have to prove this in the event of a claim.

The properly legal way is to buy specialist insurance for expats, but that's usually expensive and requires a specialist broker.

Do you have any contacts for such brokers ? I have the same issue, am visiting UK quite frequently and would like to drive my Mum's car.
Edit: found this one, looks like it might fit the bill https://www.tempcover.com/contact-us.

Not sure if you managed to get this done but the way to do it is be added 'named driver' for a period of time.
The alternative is to have your father in law insure the car 'fully comprehensive' covering any driver, you might have to pay the extra premium for him but this way any driver of the car is covered.

unfortunately not correct if the driver is not a UK resident or doesn’t hold a UK licence. Most if not all policies will require you to be a resident.

Aviva was also our insurer in the UK, in 2018 we were able to add our pet sitters from Australia to our vehicle policy. We had to supply Aviva with:
Copies of the sitters' International Drivers Permits
Copies of their Australian drivers licenses
Copies of their passports.

I'm not sure if the 2 countries both being right-hand driving made it easier to get this insurance, but it probably was. I can't remember how much it was for the 2 months they were on the policy, but I remember being very surprised at how cheap it was.

you’ve quoted me a bit out of context there :) …. My point being it’s not as simple as just adding a named driver on a UK policy.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning you'd said anything wrong, was just giving some extra info for people reading now or in the future.

Just thought I would refresh this post.... Thanks to everyone for the answers.. We didn't need it in the end as I found a good deal on a hire car...

Anyway... with hire car prices now being so extortionately high I am again looking for this option. Seems Aviva wont do it for non residents so looking for any other options.

We will be in the UK for a month and just will not pay 2000+ pounds for a hire car....

Appreciate any news leads that anyone has for temporary Non Resident Car Insurance...

2k for a month seems alright. I pay that for 2 weeks sometimes.

Aye - we're looking for a family car for a month and it's coming to around £4,000.

Hire cars in UK are very supply and demand algorithm-ish.

I was waiting for my new motor in Jan/Feb and filled a few weeks hiring Mon am - Fri pm from various companies at Gatwick Airport after getting rid of the old car.

Europcar and Sixt - averaging around £20-30/day. In that period I had a Vauxhall Cross-something, Audi A2 and VW Golf. New cars, returned at the end of the week after winter site visits looking a right mess. Worked a treat then half term arrived and prices went up four-fold.

No idea about short term insurance but my 18 year old son has a specialist Young Driver insurance with a company called Marmalade - they may do something similar.
