Re: Cape Town
I'm there for a long weekend mid June staying just behind the V&A as I can't be arsed weekending in joburg again
I get to SA 3 or 4 times a year with work and joburg feels safer now than back in 2003 when it was so mad we said we wouldn't go again !!!!
Never seen so many people wearing Rolex etc in a country where everyone says don't
There is a really nice Raddison over looking the sea some 7 or so clicks from long St.
If I don't get mugged then I will report back on my suite.. Allegedly a 180 degree balcony to capture the best views.
Lots of boutique B and B's or if you want central then check out the Tsogo sun in CBD

Re: Cape Town
I lived in Cape Town in the '90s. Every time I go back it feels a bit less safe than the last time. I don't put all that down to middle age. The worst crime risk in Simon's Town back in the day was the skollies nicking your washing.
Jo'burg has shifted its CBD north to Sandton, partly because the centre had become a basket case. I felt perfectly safe walking around Sandton when I was there last October. That said, the host company still laid on an armed police escort every day we bussed it up to Pretoria.

You can walk to V&A in daylight, although the hotel do a shuttle bus. Sevruga is worth trying for dinner if it's still there in V&A, they also have another restaurant nearby which is good food and a great bar.

Would really love to go to SA, but upon reading this coupled with other anecdotes I've heard, I think I'll stick with my Kevlar vest and head to South Chicago.
