So is there a shortcut for degrees on non-Apple PCs or not?

Look in the bottom left of yours screen, you've got:

Fn cltrl alt cmd spacebar. It might also be called Option or marked with ⌥.
Found it...

I think it's Alt-G (the one to the right hand side of the space bar) and 0176 on your numpad.

Ive been to this town in the summers for a day and there is NO way I can explain the utter dryness of the wall upon wall of heat that will hit you when you step outside. Ive been told that this place and Sibbi (another close by town in Sindh) are considered one of the top contenders for the hottest places in the world!
A normal day in a place like this would start at 4 am in the morning and get where you need to get by 8 am. The sit it out till maybe 6-7pm and then you step outside again. Ofcourse if this was the Gulf everything would be air conditioned but its not, plus there are huge electric outages there

i believe (though happy to be corrected) that most car temp guages are near the tyres and are reading the temperature of the road surface. (so not really reflecting air temperature).

Also I think the Dubai temps are read in the shade at the meterological site at the airport. So it would have to be pretty hot to read 50 in the shade there.

The temp outside in your garden in direct sunlight will be very different from the reported temperature in the paper (which is a shaded temp) and also from your car guage.

Having said all that, anything above 43 is PDH!

my hubs works on site and they have had a reading in the shade for something reaching 56 degrees... unofficially of course

You're correct on temperature measurements at Dubai and think of Stevenson Screen.
