Camera nerds help required
 

I know its been done (Probably last Xmas) but this years present is a Camera.

I have looked around and it seems the best bang for buck is the Sony HX300, 20 megapixel, an aperture of 2.8 for shit light and 50x Zoom for Qr1800........

Obviously asking the assistants is a waste of time as they want to sell me the Qr6000 David Bailey limited edition and not listen to anything I say.

My questions they cannot answer are:-

Do I need 20 megapixels or is 14 sufficient?

Am I missing a camera that is better for a novice who wants good pictures in all conditions day and night.

My cousin took one to my brothers wedding last year, Awesome pics until the film ran out after 10 pictures...........The old achilles heel.

14's more than enough. At happy-snapper level go for a fast lens (2.8 is quite fast), ease of use, strong flash and good recommendations from the sites the previous posted gave links to.
