Re: Bucket of Vindaloo

So England went through the entire 90 minutes without a shot on goal (apart from the penalty) against a dogged defence of well organised yellow shirted terriers. Augurs well for the next match???

Colombia painfully lacked James' leadership on the pitch and - hard to imagine I know - seemed kind of hypnotised by the idea of playing England. I think that's why they descended into the noxious niggling tactics that were so frustrating for the first hour before they finally started to play and show some of the capability that was on display when they so elegantly shredded Poland. Of course it was worse when the obviously immature England lads responded in kind, just without the finesse. I was glad that it was Henderson who missed in the shootout as he deserved to be the scapegoat, if there was to be one, after his earlier petulant histrionics. By the way, why didn't Vardy take a pen? I was sure he'd be up right after Kane.

What yesterday's games suggest to me is that England-Sweden will be painful. Sweden, brilliantly aware of their shortcomings, will once more sit deep and defend robustly ceding possession to an England team without even a bare smidgen of creativity in midfield. Better hope for lots of corners. And Sweden on the break is as terrifying a prospect as, well, England on the break. God that will be 90 (or, almost certainly, 120+) minutes of my life that I will never get back.

Really, that side of the draw should be for the plate or something. The four best teams left are on the other side. It physically pains me to think that one of Uruguay or France will be out in a few days and one of England or Sweden will be through!!!

Good game though.

Most of my money was on the England game, came out very well actually.

England were easily the better side but of course got rocked by the late goal, bit of a sucker punch but they rode it well to run out the extra time. It was a good old school tough, hard hitting, dirty and emotional match that was great to watch as a neutral. The ref did a good job not letting it descend to five sendings off and a mini riot :)

I have to admit as soon as Henderson missed the penalty I was sure the same old story was about to play out, but kudos to the team they held their nerve. I was watching the game on ITV and after the shootout I don't think any of the pundits could speak, especially Wright he sounded like he had been crying. !!

You've posted what I was thinking. Ref was solid, Colombians should **** off back to their third world, police-less state and beat each other up there instead of trying to bully our boys.

Was interesting watching Sweden vs Switzerland and then Engerland versus Colombia afterwards. The former was a very cleanly played game, elegant even. The latter was rough and tumble and aggressive and you suspected that if the spectators and refs weren't there blood might have been shed.

I will be watching come Saturday to see how differently Engerland performs against Sweden.

They will be gents. We were drawn into that mess and it's not our standard style of play.

Colombia were disgraceful and I thought the ref. was bit weak during the first half, but someone must have shown him the VAR while he was having his root beer - the quick flurry of yellow cards in the second half certainly calmed the game. Was a hard game to watch and that 92min screw up was a nail biter. Obviously I was with the rest of England thinking we were out when it boiled down to the penos. I went from singing "we're going home" to "it's coming home"

Sweden will go a good fair game, played by the rules.

Amen brother Millhouse. Falcao is a disgrace and a fraud.

Can't win pretty all the time, can't look good all the time. In fact, we rarely look good but if we can win the world cup like this, I'll take it every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Ah, seduced by the Scandinavian stereotypes... Sweden can't succeed at the game they play without being practiced in the dark arts. What they lack in theatricality they make up for in efficiency and are thus much more effective. You just can't consistently win games with less than 30% possession, and without any particularly gifted or creative players upfield, if you don't have an extensive box of tricks to draw on. And they won't be giving away stupid penalties like Colombia.

Speaking of which, I've seen an interesting description of Harry Kane's wrestling move in the box - you know the one for which Tunisia were not penalised but Colombia were. The basic premise is that Kane draws the defender into "mounting" him, so to speak by grabbing his arm, turning and backing into him. I haven't seen the incidents in slo-mo since I read that but it is striking that it seemed to be a very similar motion with Kane in the box with two different Tunisian defenders and Sanchez last night. It might also explain some of Sanchez's overdone outrage at the penalty award - he does play in England remember - West Brom if i recall?

Being half Scottish I always want them to do well, just not against England. Dad would be happy if England lost, but he's happy that I'm happy at the moment. Its sweet really, I can tell the blue blood in him just wants England out and to be done.

When the world cup grows to 48 teams so many of these smaller nations will make it and think they're good enough. It'll be really cute.

Until then, unless we win it, we'll have idiots slinging shit.
If we do win it, they'll say we didn't deserve it and all that guff.

What to do?

Where is the bitterness? I have no intention of joining the mindless cheerleading (I mean has there ever been a more meaningless "hat-trick" than Kane's vs. Panama) and am trying to remain objective. Why should I reflexively support England? I want the teams that play good, entertaining, skillful football to succeed.

On that basis, I wanted the Colombia that skewered Poland to show up and get through because that was better than anything England had shown so far. Thirty minutes into the match i wanted Colombia to lose but by half time, as England joined the petulance party, I was neutral. When Colombia finally showed up in the second half of the second half then I thought they deserved to go on and win. England were creating nothing.

By the second half of extra time I was neutral again as England, in an unprecedented development, looked like scoring an actual proper goal. But they flattered to deceive and a goal at that point would have been hard on Colombia.

And I may be one of the few who actually expected England to win the shoot-out even after Henderson's miss.

I reported the Kane argument that I read because I had noticed the same odd way that he ended up on the ground with the defender on top of him in all three incidents. Noteworthy at least. And maybe because he's a spud (like Sanchez but nobody bit on the West Brom thing). But it seems that in this Trumpian world only the news and opinions that conform to the required narrative are acceptable. Any other perspective must be dismissed as the product of a twisted mind.

So England may well win the world cup aided by a laughably distorted draw and congratulations to them if they do. But unless they suddenly transform their aimless playing style then I, like any neutral observer, will take no joy in their victory. Much like Greece 2004 or Chelsea 2012. Are you so blinded by pubescent over-excitement that you can't understand that logical position?

You made some decent points there . The truth is that England are limited and they're set up to try and squeeze as much out of the system as possible . We've never done that before as we've always messed around trying to fit players in the side such as Beckham , Lampard , Scholes , Gerrard , Cole and so on and it doesn't work.

Kane is one of the best in the competition and that's a fact . it's never going to be all out attack minded total football because we haven't got those players which can turn the game in the middle of the park. What it does bring though is hard work , belief and a great team ethic and anyone that's played competitively will understand that .

I can't see England winning the World Cup but I can see them beating Sweden and then it's a lottery and maybe they're a better side than people make out . Every goal and every victory just makes all the detractors even more bitter .

It's Coming Home

I still don't think there is a world cup in them but getting to a semi final from this current draw is certainly possible.

I don't think at any point you're actually genuinely and honestly trying to be objective. I might be wrong, but that's how it reads.

But in summary to some of the points you make, because it would be rude to not reply properly:
No international hat-trick is worthless in my opinion, you can only score against what's in front of you. Someone made great waves about Uruguay not conceding in 7 games but the teams they'd played hadn't been great...but that's not their fault.
England play good, entertaining (at times), skillful football. We're hardly like Spain for crying out loud. When a team sits back and it's a training match, like much of the other night's game then it's never going to be that exciting for anyone.
I think England did very well to not get drawn into the antics and petulance sooner and to a greater extent. I thought the Colombians were pretty much disgraceful across the board but it's what they felt they needed to do to get a result and it nearly worked.
I thought we'd win the shootout too actually, I'm not sure why, but I had a good feeling. Guess we lose the next one like in '96.
Interesting about Kane. I can't see any of them being anything other than really obvious penalties....but if he's putting himself in that position then I guess it's like someone cutting across a defender or doing any work to draw a foul. I don't think he'll ever admit it and I don't think we'd ever prove / disprove it so I guess it is what it is.
The draw is just what has happened, distorted or not..... It's a tournament and if Germany had won their group we'd possibly be facing them next and if we won that it might be Spain in the next round. It's not England's (or Croatia, Russia and Sweden's) fault. Would it help England win the world cup? Maybe, would that matter in the grand scheme of things? Maybe, maybe not? Will it just load the guns of those people who like to take shots at England? Abso-****ing-lutely.
Greece in 2004 was an absolute masterclass. What about Portugal 2016? They drew all their group games and finished third in their group needed extra time, penalties and Wales in the semis to get there? What about Spain 2010 who won all the knockout games 1-0 by crushing the souls of their opposition? I think you need to go back quite far to find swash-buckling flair and attacking free-flowing football played throughout a tournament by a team who wins it. Even Germany in 2014 who destroyed Brazil so joyfully had to struggle past Algeria in extra time and sent the final the same way. It's just not how you win a tournament.
No I'm not totally blinded, I'm partially blinded. I'm getting really excited at the prospect of England doing well, which a quarter final is pretty much the best I could have dreamed of before. Why on earth wouldn't I be? No, I don't think we'll win it and I think Sweden will turn us over, but it's going to be another shit game for a neutral because they'll sit back and soak up any pressure we can work out to put on. I'd suggest you just don't watch it because my prediction is 'turgid'.

I'd agree with this and maybe i'm struggling a little with the very unfamiliar sensation of not instinctively disliking the England players - well apart from Ashley Young and Angelina Henderson - even the three spuds. Kane is, inevitably, over-rated by the English media though. He's certainly no Gary Lineker. Actually now that I think about it, Robson's England maybe the nearest comparator to Southgate's team in terms of minimal dislikeability, apart from Stuart Pearse. But even though I don't dislike England, I can't muster any enthusiasm for them. As tedious as Spain could be to watch, for example, at least you had moments of inspiration and brilliance. Still, think if Big Sam were still in charge!!!

You really don't have the historical awareness to understand why the relationship between England and the other "home countries", especially Ireland, will never be symmetrical, at least not in the forseeable future?

Anyway, I'm not sure what is the relevance of your post. When you want a comparison to the current situation, where do you look? An equally imaginary future? You don't think it makes sense to compare the last England player to win a golden boot and the first candidate since? And what better comparison for the gentlemanly, decent, thoughtful Gareth Southgate than the gentlemanly, decent, thoughtful Bobby Robson, and I'm sure he would be as honoured by the comparison as he should be. Though in 1990 I did have my own team to follow whose playing style could equally only be appreciated by their partisans.

I think I must be having a seriously blonde moment (and a delayed one at that): why is the thread titled Bucket of Vindaloo?

I'm guessing in honour of the famous English footie song 'Vindaloo'

So anyway, why didn't Vardy take a penalty in the shootout?

It looked like he had a groin issue. If you watch the footage once they had won he was hobbling holding his groin when he ran to join the team

Vardy pulled his groin and Dier stepped in , wasn't even down as a taker . Balls of steel

Let me be the first here to say well done England for showing up the deficiencies of that limited Swedish side. The Swedish goalie has questions to answer about both of those goals but England made and took their opportunities and Sweden didn't and that was the difference. England actually looked comfortable in the second half and the match was only truly hard to watch (as I feared and predicted) before the first goal. I still think the two teams that were eliminated yesterday are better than any of the four that played today but such is the nature of the competition.

And this encapsulates my position much more eloquently than i can manage:

Am I the first one on this bored to make it to the office this morning? Scamp, how are you bearing up?

Excellent match yesterday. Very tempted to fly back to UK Tuesday to be there for Wednesday's match and hopefully the finals. I have a feeling that not being in the country should we win will be a lifelong regret.

I'm in the office and buzzing, both still drunk (perhaps) and with excitement.
I can't think of a more comfortable and professional performance against a good team in a while. It was miles from perfect and Pickford pulled off a couple of worldies but in reality, we never looked that troubled and like MAT says, it was only wobbly before the first went in, that settled lots of nerves.

I fly to the UK Thursday night / Friday morning. Will be in the UK for the final and if we're lucky enough to make it, I might try to get to Moscow, will be googling today (when I did the other day I found indirect flights but totally ignored visa issues, so that's part I).

Its. Coming. Home.

Just stick to hating us. It's easier for you, it's easier for us, it's just what is meant to happen. Trying, as nice as it is to hear, is probably futile and is like me trying to convince someone I'm genuinely interested in their beige and brown stamps collection, strictly from 1952-53.

Anyway, I saw a mate post a photo of people jumping up and down on top of an ambulance car in the UK after winning. I hope the UK just about retains a sense of positive celebrations and not just anarchy. The video of people dancing in the entrance of IKEA is just brilliant (unless they damage stuff).

I left straight after the game so managed to make the office by 8 :( Clearly I failed to celebrate enough

I was in at 8 but shattered from staying up late, so proud of our blokes and am going to take a half morning off for the Croatia match
