I really cant think of a more stupid thing to do.
And for 260 quid?
The death sentence is a bit severe, but surely they werent expecting anything else?

If you are facing a death sentence of selling a bit of weed or nicking an apple, you might just as well carry a gun too, and use it, should you face arrest. You have nothing to lose, you're going to face the same punishment regardless, and have no incentive to come quietly.
Western Europe grappled with this problem up until the middle ages, which is probably a fair indication of where the UAE judicial system is at.

While I don't agree with the death sentence (for any crime) it's a well publicised punishment in UAE so sell some drugs here and you take your chances.

Yes, and of course the impartiality or reliability of the judicial system is beyond reproach so we can trust 100% any judgement the legal system makes, like this for example

Perhaps this weed-selling chappy should claim he was drugged too?
The legal system here is f**ked up, and decisions and punishments are arbitrary and based primarily on who you are and who you know, not the evidence or the relative severity of what you did. So please let's not shower praise on it for sentencing some small-fry to death while the well-connected can commit far more serious offences and get the victims banged up instead.

You turn up here, abide by the different laws (whether you agree with them or not) and get on with life. Frankly, if you do something here that could result in the death penalty then, literally, on your head be it.

Hm. It's not as if someone might get stitched up, is it? The case sounds dodgy.

His lawyer (local, naturally) advised him to not hand himself in, so he spent several months living with various friends (not me I should add) until his lawyer had bargained his sentence down to 3 weeks - which he ended up serving. Not surprisingly, he decided to leave and never come back not long afterwards.
One should be careful of saying 'abide by the different laws', because there really are no rules here. If an emirati with more wasta than you t-bones your car and kills your family, someone will have to pay, and it won't be him. If you're driving, it'll be your fault.
We should certainly all be aware that justice is arbitrary but that doesn't make it right, and I am quite sure if a member of your family was on the wrong end of a bad decision, you'd not be quite as willing to roll with it.

This case is full of holes and I'd be very surprised if the sentence was carried out.
I know of a Brit in jail in Dubai for dealing coke and he's expecting 8 years. Someone else involved in the same 'organisation' has been released for giving info and names of everyone else who was remotely connected.
Drugs, of all kinds, are far more prevalent here than many imagine.
