A 19-year-old Syrian and a Briton, 21, were both sentenced to death today for selling an undercover policeman Dh1,500 worth of marijuana.

After the verdict was announced, the Briton’s mother collapsed outside the Criminal Court while the Syrian’s mother tried to comfort her, telling her they could appeal the decision.

It'll never get carried out - a few years in clink then pardoned I'd expect.

It was scrolling across the bottom of SkyNews just now, so I guess the tabloids will run with it tomorrow. I can't imagine they will go through with it though he may have to spend a fair bit of time in jail.

less so if it turns out the Brit is of Sudanese or arab descent as he could well be...or on the other more sensationalist hand he could be the ex head boy of one of the International schools...dunno

I don't support the death penalty.

But anyone daft enough to sell drugs in the UAE has it coming in one form or another. The country is insanely strict about drugs and any fool willing to take the risks will have to suffer the consequences. At the very least these kids should be awarded the Darwin award for their attempt to self-weed themselves out of the gene pool.

wow. So many countries have sodomy down as punishable by death. Now given that sodomy technically covers oral sex you gotta be careful what you ask for in Africa.

Is it unlikely to happen because one of the guilty is a Westerner? Suppose both the chaps were Asians, would the death sentence then be a done deal?
