i never claimed to makes sense-it was said as tongue in cheek comment saying that people who work in fashion wear black becuase they don't care about wearing colours that suit them they care about wearing fashion and because they work in fashion the colour to wear is black whether it is in commercial fashion or not it will always be the fashion colour to wear- end of there is no sense to it- and I am basically talking pretenscious bollocks and now trying to explian my pretensicous bollocks as i work in fashion and that what fashion people do...

To match the chinos? What's your definition of a power tie? (Better still, post a pic of one.) I have a couple of difficult-negotiations ties, similar to the below but bright red (the other is also bright red, but with subtle white dragonflies):

Most are fine (if you must wear a noose) as long as you avoid 'comedy' ties. They very quickly tell people you're a personality-free cretin, which I suppose could be handy for interviewers,

If you're going to wear one, at least make sure that it matches in some way the rest of your attire, that it doesn't have a footballer's knot (unless you're a professional footballer), that it reaches your belt plus a bit, and that it appears to have some aesthetic function other than keeping your lunch off your shirt.
As I'm asked from time to time at work, "Do you discriminate?" "'Course I bloody do, because if I didn't then my actions and choices would be indiscriminate, and I'd end up wearing a yellow tie with a yellow shirt."
