Re: Books reading at the moment?
I was reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang (no, definitely not a cook book), which got generally good reviews but, frankly, I found uncomfortable, so gave up on it.
Am I alone in doing that? Despite critical acclaim (or not), I'll ditch a novel (or any other book) if it doesn't inspire me, sometimes after a few pages, sometimes near the end. I gave up on Crime and Punishment with less than a chapter to go, it just got too dense.

I used to push through to completing the book but then I realised I rarely was ever satisfied. If you didn't care for the book early on, 99% of the time you won't care for what comes later.
Most of the time I pick up a book and read a few pages and shrug and put it down. It's rare for a book to truly capture my full interest that I buy it.

I'm with you, sister.
I read the economist (paper version) when taking a shit, and the FT (on my phone).
The kindle only comes into action when I'm on a long haul flight and I've finished the economist.

I'm glad I didn't include the example I was going to use (Child 44). I think I'd have got much less praise
God I love the Economist but only treat myself to it for flights. Got India next week and the UK the week after. Perfect.

It's expensive but very well done. I read about two a month - always picked up from the lounges. I've always wanted a subscription but never done it.

It's the only magazine I've ever come close to paying for. I still get their daily round up emails which are nice.

C'mon, you must have paid for Hustler or Playboy back in the day. Or do you just edge into that generation who never had to summon up the courage to reach for the top shelf?

Actually, no, that's not entirely true for me. I'm just of the age to be among the last who would buy porn mags. The internet for most of my teens was something only weirdo geeks got into and there weren't even pictures.
Started to change around 1996-1997.
But Scamp is the baby of the bored and grew up in a very different world from us. He probably thinks the Playboys and Hustlers are peculiarities for grandpas who get excited at the sight of an ankle. The real stuff is all online.

In theory. In reality they're glossy pages....
Never, we pretty much had the internet for that.
