On this occasion, though, the authorities seem to be taking some kind of a stand e.g. dismissing the policemen. Apparently the root of a lot of these cases is unscrupulous people trying to grab the Christian (or other minority) properties when they have been run out of town. But it's scary how easy it seems to be to foment a mob there based on lies and hearsay... On the other hand, I think the Sunni on Shia violence in Pakistan causes this to pale into insignificance.

And they have arrested people too, which is good. The baying mob mentality is what worries me, the slightest impression that someone has blasphemed and they behave like a pack of animals. Agreed the Sunni Shia hatred is a different league.

bad economy = no jobs / no work = no money = too much free time = easy to gather walf-wits in one spot = easyily becomes a mob

i know the actual equation has too many other complicated variables in it but i am a strong believer in idle minds etc etc, get a man something to do and he really wont have time to **** around you know

It's just a backward country with religious lunatics littered all over the place. It'll never change unless it kicks off and the US/India turn into a plate of glass.

There are poor people all over the world who don't turn into howling mobs - the economic argument doesn't wash. Poverty is no excuse for bad behaviour. Pakistan has a nuclear program and receives more aid than most other countries.

Blasphemy law is a convient excuse/law to commit ethnic cleansing and or genocide of 'the other'.

Would you consider Serbia a backword country? I trust you are aware of the massacre of thousands of innocent Muslims by Serbian mobs some years back! These incidents in Pakistan are just peanuts compared to the horrors that happened to the Bosnian Muslims then

The Muslims were the targets in Serbia so let Muslims have a punt back at Christians in Pakistan? Are you for real?

Are you for real with your 1st point? Any regime (I won't say country as that's unfair on the populous) that advocates genocide is backward. So if Jews started terminating Germans now that's peanuts too?

What is ironic about the OP's link is the following sentence.

Police said two friends, a Muslim and a Christian, had apparently become involved in a drunken argument, with the former accusing the latter of a blasphemous comment.
I thought booze was banned under islam, so who was the bad guy here?

Until a nuclear warhead goes AWOL. And having the ISI in the mix, this is a real possibility.

Serbia has a very long history of being invaded by Muslims, going back some 800 years or so. A very, very different situation to Pakistan - a new country that seems bent of being the hotbed of the most fundamentalist Muslims on earth...which is also nuclear armed and was the USA's biggest aid recipient for some years.

Bosnians were the prime components in the SS Hanzar division and sent thousands of Serbs and Jews to their deaths in World War Two - The Serbs didn't just decide one day to kill lots of them. It was the product of centuries of conflict, destruction of Orthodox churches and ethnic conflict.

Not at all fair to compare to the Balkans. Serbia has paid with it's land for it's crime and is smaller now. Pakistan will pay with more money and aid from the US and China for allowing it's own citizens to live in fear simply because they are a different religion.

Pakistan is much much worse. Serbian Muslims had the West go to bat for them and have their own territory.
In Pakistan, since the formation of that country, the minorities( Christians and Hindus) have been under the boot of the Sunnis. Stories of ethnic mobs attacking Christians or kidnapping Hindu women is not a onesee twosee thing. One must keep in mind the daily oppression and discrimation that Christians and some other minorities face.
The Shia have constantly been getting slaughtered by a certain a Sunni group, a group who by the way enjoy support from the Pakistani establishment.

Lastly lets not forget Pakistan committing genocide in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) during th'e later's push for independence from Pakistan
