Close to the dinner venue so you don't need to travel afterwards :-)

Depends.
If dinner is in Marina then stay in the marina.
If it's in downtown then stay downtown or business bay or SZR.
If it's in either place and you've booked a hotel in the other, don't worry. Nothing is more than 20-30mins away from each other in the cab, realistically.

Re: Best area to stay in Dubai?
If you just want a place to sleep then there's a bunch of decent hotels in Al Barsha behind MoE. Ibis, CityMax, Novotel, even a Hilton. They're cheaper than Marina and Downtown and lots of taxis around. Barsha is also about halfway between the two.
Traffic isn't an issue in Dubai on Fridays except possibly in the evenings to Dubai Mall.
Another place to stay is along Sheikh Zayed between Downtown and WTC. A couple Rotonas, the Conrad, H Hotel, Warwick, Emirates Grand, Ritz Carlton, Fairmont, Shangri-La, Crowne Plaza. Hotel ghetto a step up from Al Barsha.

Re: Best area to stay in Dubai?
My mate and his Mrs do Airbnb and has a wicked apartment in the marina.... Awesome views.
Other than that I'd just see whats the best deal you can get on Expedia or booking.com or whatever.
As Scamp says, you can get most places in 20 mins in a taxi. If you're all out for a night out I would probably book towards the marina though. Not saying its better but for folk who don't know Dubai it has more of a choice.

Citymax Barsha and IBIS offering around 375 per night if you want somewhere cheap and cheerful.

Thanks guys I'll keep looking on booking.com. Although going out for dinner and just need somewhere to stumble back to afterwards, I am looking for somewhere nice to lounge by the pool through the day and on Saturday
