Trust me (I'm also from East Sussex, but not Brighton) - yes. In some areas it's merely 'encouraged' but mostly it's compulsory.
A few years ago, I heard about a pub where straight people used to gather, but it soon went out of business........
They even elected a Green MP for God's sake - a sure sign of ubiquitous gayness...........

Nonsense. I spent my teens not that far from Brighton and it's not even mostly gay. Plenty of general dropouts, students, the middle class as well.
It is a 'gay friendly' town, but your excuse of being forced to join in just doesn't wash with me...

Or was it something to do with the red handkerchief you displayed so prominently?

I used to work in a 'gay' restaurant in Brighton whilst at sixth form college and had one of the staff, Big Gay Jon, tell me that I had child bearing hips (ooh look at her). All in all they were a great laugh loved a party with a bit of Amyl but I never felt threatened as a straightee. The gay principal at college came in with some of his mates which could have been a bit awkward for him but he didn't show it - they were all pissed though.
Plus me and my best mate went to stay at his elder brother David's pad in Paris in 1990. David was a waiter (white jacket) at the Moulin Rouge at the time. Lost contact with both brothers since but Dave turned up on't telly as the main puff in 4 puffs and a piano on Jonathan Ross show!!
Saying that I was propositioned in a Westfield Mall in San Francisco a few months back by a tall French gay who wanted to give me a foot massage!!! Live and let live.
