Default Belgian on hunger strike in UAE refuses liquids

By Camilla Hall and Simeon Kerr in Dubai

Oliver Loeb, a 51-year old Belgian imprisoned for bounced cheques in Dubai, has accelerated his 21-day hunger strike by refusing liquids.

Mr Loeb, who says he has not drunk since Monday, is one of around 16 prisoners on strike in Dubai’s Al-Awir prison over their sentences for bouncing cheques, a criminal offence in the UAE.

“I promised my wife I will be out by the end of the month or I’ll be dead,” says Mr Loeb.

Only FT subscribers can read that...might want to find an alternative link.

Seems a bit silly to die over a bounced cheque - they will let him out eventually and deport him if he can't pay. It's a ridiculous law but he isn't going to change anything I feel...

Attempting suicide in Jail is also an offence and you usually end up with another year...........Ramadan in 3 months away and he would probably get pardoned if he got his head down. I fear he is probably making things worse for himself.

On a purely pramatic level, you chaps are right that he would fare better if he quietly sorted it out. But I still got to respect the chap for standing up for an unjust law. Sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns if meaningfull change is desired, this case likely won't be it but change doesn't come about by being meek.

He's the wrong race, tribe and religion to expect any change to happen.

seems he is on a drip.

I like this twist:

A prison official, Brig Omar Al Attar, denied that Loeb would have been taken to a hospital. "We have our own hospital," he said. "We don't need to take them outside."

He also said that the prisoner was not on a hunger strike, describing news reports to the contrary as "propaganda".

"He's as normal as anyone else," he said. "He's eating his food and he's OK. Lots of people make up stories for nothing."

Seems there are quite a few foreigners protesting debtor's prison by going on a hunger strike.
