before you came to the Middle East

Re: before you came to the Middle East
nope... just took the plunge. Mr Kitty had already worked out that his salary and package were competitive, we'd been out for a 3 week stint to do a reccie and yeah, bit the bullet.
I did, however, join BE within a week of arriving and my first ever post was to do with a LL reneging on his contract, just after we'd handed over the hugest cheque we'd ever seen in our lives.
Ohhhhhh, happy days.

I used this site an awful lot, especially to get an idea of living costs, also did my own interweb searches, had been out a few times consulting out here so has a teeny idea of what i was getting myself into.... I'd say it doesn't matter how much research you do nothing prepares you for this place lol- although must say i haven't found it as frustrating red tape wise as I was expecting (so far touch wood) but I am pretty laid back so perhaps I just don't let that get to me!

I was in the same boat as Mr MH...
My existing employer moved me here. Had worked in the region for 4-5 years whilst commuting back to the UK so no real need to do any serious trolling...

Re: before you came to the Middle East
Lived for 2 spells in Riyadh and Cairo a coupla decades ago, so knew what ME was like in general, and had vowed never to come back (hated Riyadh, love/hate relationship with Egypt). Came to AD 2 years ago for a 1-day business trip, and realised it was OK. Negotiated a 3-month contract before signing on fully. Didn't know about BE then, but would probably have drawn enough conclusions from the 1-day visit. If I hadn't had the 1-day visit and had been offered a full-time job here? Would probably have insisted on a visit before deciding. If I'd known about The Sandpit I think I'd have been comfortable with deciding on advice here but only after having been a member for some time--in order to know whose advice to trust.

Re: before you came to the Middle East
Just decided one day that we would give living abroad a go whilst the kids were still small.
I did have a friend in AD on Facebook and I did ask her a few questions and she told me about EW, although I didn't really look at it until I got here.

No research prior to going to Kuwait but tons of prior overseas experience.
