Beetroot
I know, I know, this should be on some other forum, but…
Based on (admittedly rather sketchy) empirical evidence, I firmly believe that a daily helping of beetroot lowers my blood pressure. I can buy freshly-cooked beetroot back home in my local supermarket, but can't find it here—but it is available fresh. Does anyone know how to cook it?
I also know I could googlewhack it, but I'd rather trust someone I know (well, alright, some anonymous person who posts on an internet forum).

Re: Beetroot
i've seen it in spinneys...boil with the skin on until soft and then cool down and peel, you may want to use some sexy rubber gloves as it stains your skin really badly...

Anybody who likes beetroot is in league with the devil.
Why don't you stroke a cat instead?

Re: Beetroot
this website gives you lots of tips for cooking beetroots.

Beetroot juice really helps with your blood pressure
This is a good link

I would think canned beets would be ok as long as they don't have added salt..beets are quite high in salt naturally.

I've seen some stonking ones in Lulus. As the others have said, just boil it senseless (for 30mins/ 1h), topping up water as you go. Then rinse them by filling the saucepan with cold water and peel in the water (helps to avoid staining by kind of rubbing the skin off - it's quite weird because it almost slips off with a bit of help.
I once tried a really, er... interesting recipe for chocolate and beetroot cake. Was a lovely cake until you stopped eating it and were left with a beetrooty aftertaste.... and I like beetroot!

Re: Beetroot
Peel and cube, then roast (in olive oil) for about an hour at 200C with a sprinkling of chopped garlic and ginger on the top.
Probably nukes all the health benefits of beetroot but tastes fantastic!
