"Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we're going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that's something we won't negotiate," he said.

Valcke criticised the pace of construction at Brazil's world cup venues "The fact that we have the right to sell beer has to be a part of the law."

No, you don't sound a bit arrogant, you are arrogant, you twat. And (if he's still around for 2022) I bet he'll change his tune when the Qatari's either dig their heels in or come up with a counter-proposal that would benefit Fifa.

The Qatari's would sell their own mothers for a slice of the action . There's not a u turn that these guys are not capable of .

You'll get all the beer you want in 2022 and more as well !

I forsee the Qataris creating some special alcohol consumable areas while still claiming that Sharia laws are respected. IOW it will be like anything else in the region, claim piousness and what goody goody Muslims they are but wink wink nod nod allow alcohol in some capacity, and cruise ship loads of hookers too.

Fifa is spineless and corrupt so wouldn't expect them to do anything but gobble on Qatari .......

They won't be able to avoid saying the same thing, because if they do, the Brazilian government will likely sue them, while any host after that will claim Qatar set a new precedent.

Could FIFA end up rubbing the Muslims they were trying to court up the wrong way? Oh yes. I hate to say it, but I really wouldn't be too surprised if there was a terrorist attack against FIFA (not in Qatar though, and not during the world cup).

Beer will be freely available during 2022 in hotels that hold a license and in the dedicated fanzones .

Fanzones will be a series of bus shelters in Raslaffan Petrochemical complex !

However, I have a feeling that FIFA will demand it should be freely available wherever and whenever.

And if Qatar wants the World Cup, they'll roll over and ask FIFA to tickle its belly.

FIFA is be very hypocritical here. The are sticking their noses into politics and almost demanding a change to a country's laws.

On the flipside, any national Football Federation has to remain totally impartial to that country's politics otherwise face expulsion from international competitions.

On another note, is Qatar the smallest nation ever to host a World Cup? How are they going to have enough stadia? It will be a complete farce in my opinion.

Sharing the WC between Qatar, UAE, Oman, Bahrain & Kuwait would make more sense but still present lots of probles. Giving it ALL to Qatar is an absurd decision considering how tiny Qatar is. If FIFA was desperate to give it to a Muslim nation, then why not Indonesia.

Indeed...they shouldn't aware the World Cup to any country which doesn't allow alcohol in the first place. Most of the planet enjoys a beer with their football. If Qataris want to watch the game they have televisions...

Football, as much as I hate it is a lot more than a simple sport. It has a culture attached to it which doesn't cover religious laws and prohibitions.

The FIFA charter that all bidders are made aware of insists on a minimum of TWELVE stadiums in ten different cities............

.......... no problem: Doha City, Doha Industrial City, Doha Maritime City, Doha Media City, Doha Healthcare City..........

Ironically it was in Southern Mesopotamia where we have the earliest evidence for the brewing of beer.

That's before you even get on to the fact that the Shiraz grape in Shiraz Wine (go figure) comes from Iran.

Difference between this and the beer issue is that the beer issue has sponsorship money involved. Lots of sponsorship money.
