This along with Burqas and the extreme limitations on women's movement should be seen for what it really is, namely primitive male instinct to prevent other males from procreating with their females. It is much like how some male animals spend an inordinate amount of time guarding their females and fending off male suitors.

Women showing their face/figure or getting an education or moving about unaccompanied all leads to more independence for the women and increases the risk of these females going with competing males . Not to mention lowering the odds of the women being nothing but breeders.

Religion is just a Trojan horse to advance these primitive male instincts.
