Asthma

Just wondering if anyone suffers here from Asthma as a result of the air quality in Dubai?

I've been here about 18 months and i find I'm getting a bit wheezy especially living on SZR

There is an interesting article on page 4 of today's Seven Days talking about umpteen Dubai properties being infested with Legionnaires Disease.

I can honestly say my asthma is non existant here... lack of real plants I guess. The dust isn't helpful but I do try and avoid the really dusty days.

As for Legionnaires Disease - this does worry me. There is no facilities management here and loads of water fountains & a/c etc.

I hope your asthma doesn't worsen. My elder son suffered when we lived both in Japan and Cairo (poor air quality in both), but improved in God's Own Country. His occasional visits here have been attack-free (touch wood). Boots (in UK) sell plug-in air purifiers (15 quid or thereabouts) which I use here--certainly seem to make the air in my flat less dust-laden.

As to Legionnaires Disease: I fear its only time till there's an outbreak here. Water temperature of around 35C is just about perfect for breeding of the bacteria, and with non-intentional solar heating of large amounts of domestic water, bugger-all maintenance and some very crowded living quarters the risk seems high. Still, that's what I thought about Swine Flu but it didn't materialise...

Windy summer days will be the worst - sand/dust kicked up into damp air which then clogs up your lungs (mind you, even non-asthma sufferers can feel affected by that).

For some reason my son was always more prone in Ab Dab than in either Dubai or Bahrain - and if you ever get over to Riyadh, it's non-existent there (zero humidity).

Now let's talk about the epidemic of diabetes out here......... (one in four adults among the natives, and an even higher ratio amoung the under-15s I believe).

Yeah, I suspect the dust has a lot to do with it here. But generally first thing in the morning when i look out from my balcony and across Dubai you can see a cloud of thick orange/yellow fog which i guess is pollution; I'll probably look into an inhaler of sorts.
