My daughter was about 7 when she asked me to confirm 'what colour am i because my teacher [black, left wing...] says i am black'.

I said she was a sort of dusky peach colour, which horrified a black friend because i wasnt being racially appropriate whatever that is...

It seems to me that many of those that complain most about racism are among those most keen to make sure that everyone is properly assigned to the right racial bucket.

Very true. I used to work with a Polish guy and he hated Polish people.
Would he be considered a racist?

And Indians? You seen the way they treat their kind on a day to day basis.

Not their 'kind', they have their caste system, unbreakable from before birth, i had a microsoft office expert working for me, but some of my staff refused to talk to her when they needed help because she was the wrong caste... This is considered perfectly ok, but most non indians never realise it is going on around them.

And yes - black people get suntans too.
Of my two, one came out pure white, the other came out browny red.

The nurses nearly wet themselves over the white one. Blue eyes too, although they changed later on.

Also, not meant in any racist way but the darker one was really ugly when he was born. He's alright now.

I would have said its based on religion + the type of work done. While there are 4 basic castes plus outcasts, they get subdivided into 3000? Castes and 25000 sub castes. Well its nice to know where you are in the pecking order but nit so nice that you cant change it.

I recently got info on how caribbean plantations were stratified - not too dissimilar, owner-overseer-driver etc etc but you could be promoted...

I always understood that work/employment was a result of caste, not vice versa, though clearly the two go hand in hand. In other words, the jobs open to you are based on your caste, and you can't get a different job and change your caste. ... Your caste is more or less fixed, your job a little less so.

I live in India, that's pretty much BS in any of the cities. It does apply in the more rural or remote areas, though that is changing.

When I worked in IT city in Hyderabad I was told by local guys in the office that you couldn't get a job in IT [in an american co, but exclusively indian management in the office] unless you were the right caste? Also that to prevent 'problems' in the contact centres we had, only people of certain castes would be allowed to work making calls. I was assigned a guy to make my coffee, and the rules were that he could make coffee for somebody who visited me but only if they were of the required caste which I found very peculiar.

Also why is it necessary in india to pass laws to protect certain castes?

Never mind that, no speed cameras either. In many states, including where I live, they're not legal. That said red light cameras are also illegal, and we could use some of those!
