It's illogical to look to pay off the loan I should just let it run, but I have always a slight unease with outstanding loans I guess that makes me look to try to close them.
I'm the same - pay off when you can, as you never know when you can't.

But if you have the cash to pay off and the interest is negligible why bother? If you lost your job you still have the money.

my logic is not logical but instinctual

if I lost my job, I would spend the savings

I overpaid in quarterly lump sums and paid off fully my mortgage in 11 years. I am much happier knowing that ALL my savings are now true savings and I'm debt free. Intellectually I know that I would have probably saved a few hundred more pounds by not paying off earlier, but to me that is a good price to pay for peace of mind.
