Default Anyone ever owned a houseboat?

Wierd question, but i have a vague notion to buy one (UK, not here...)....

Are there any hidden catches to it (aside from mooring fees)????

a friend of mine was looking into this...she decided against it, i can ask her why if you want...i think getting a mortgage was one of the problems, and the ones she was looking at were bloody expensive...

Really? They look really good value.... 150K gets you 4 beds plus....

I can imagine that Chelsea, Kew, Embankment etc are very pricey.... Grand Union Canal in Middx and the Thames in Kent are much cheaper....

friend of mine used his housing allowance here to buy one, he lived on it in the Port in Jebel Ali. Used to brag to all and sundry how he had used his housing allowance etc etc. Anyway it burnt down!! and it wasn't insured and he lost everything. He got a pretty good ribbing about it from the lads in the bar.
