American women may - in general - be better groomed, but an obsession with appearance is very dull. Perhaps the author of the article should think about cultuvating a little depth and considering people's personalities too?
And no, I don't look like a bag of spanners.

Hummpphh better groomed huh? I may not get my nails done, I may not get waxed, (I won't be seen looking like the missing link either!).
I have my hair cut when it needs it these days, rather than every 6 weeks like it was when I was working in London, cut and colour as regular as clockwork.
But if we're generalising here, I think that British women dress far better than American women, certainly, if Mr W and I go out with his work colleagues and partners, I'm usually looking round the room at a whole heap of women wearing black trousers that I would wear to work, not to a awards ceremony or whatever it is we're at. At work, I wouldn't wear a micky mouse sweatshirt that I see bank tellers and doctors receptionsist wear.
Since moving to the US, I joke with Mr W that I'm far more attractive in the US than I ever was in the UK, because I get more people looking at me, but I think it's a combination of the fact that I'm better dressed than most women here and have a much more distinctive accent.
As for the journalist, If he wants a high maintenance woman, good for him, if he wants someone who'll have the laughter lines round her eyes as they grow old together maybe he needs to grow up a little.

"The author is a screenwriter (single) who divides his time between London and Los Angeles"
Single, what a surprise. I'm sure he's a real oil painting himself
And another thing, the fact that he's a screenwriter (and quite an active one if you google him) he's probably constantly surrounding by fake, hollywood beauty which is only attainable via a scalpel and a syringe. I have quite a few American friends who live outside of Hollywood, and they are very down to earth and normal.

This guy knows quite a lot about beauty treatments, fashion etc....for a straight guy that is...
Wonder why his friend set him up with a "dog"...I reckon he has not looked into the mirror lately.

If you search his name on Facebook, only one profile comes up and, if it is him, he doesn't look like anything special to me. Unshaven, greasy looking and unattractive.
