Well, he would. Wouldn't he?

Also, where was the support or counselling from the school? How could she be allowed to think that she was going to jail? Grossly irresponsible of the school not to have taken care of her in very traumatic circumstance.

her fellow teacher / flatmate knew but probably in confidence.

The school isn't exactly the most supportive in the city... they would have probably encouraged her to leave immediately.

That boyfriend has a lot of questions to answer...
