It is astonishing now much simple and relevant information is outright ignored by so many expats in Dubai. Everything from the laws on alcohol to RERA regulations and rental increases. I'm not targeting you specifically, Mission, but just making an observation.

I can see why everyone is saying there is more to this.

Because the Dubai constabulary are the finest in the world, there isn't another place on earth where officers of the law are more decent, upstanding and almost magically gifted in being able to detect who's guilty and who's innocent.

And very often they can do this on the spot without taking the subject back to the cells for a good kicking and a few shots of the taser.

Tourists are covered under the hotel's liquor license for the time they are on the premises, resident or not. A drunk guest that's nipped out for ciggies is no longer covered.

Nope the Law is quite clear, you have to have a licence to consume alcohol!!! Yes that is correct even to drink in a bar you are supposed to have a licence, it is not just for purchasing booze!!!!

You have to be a resident, over 21, non-muslim and earn over 3kAED.......and this is where Tourists/Visitors fal foul of the law, as they cannot apply for a licence and therefore are not allowed to consume alcohol!!!

But it's pointless having laws, if you ignore them for everyone until you just want to nail some guys 4rse to the wall for whatever reason.

I think we all know that it really doesn't matter what the law is in Dubai, if you annoy the wrong person, you'll end up in jail regardless based on tying your shoes up in a pornographic fashion or having a hair style against sharia law or some other such nonsense. Eventually it'll get dropped, but in the mean time you'll be ruined, have spent months in a squalid jail and quite possibly worse.

Quite true, which is why I was told if someone makes a complaint against you do the same to them immediately....just make something up no matter how bizarre...that way it gets adjudicated at the cop shop and all parties apologise and go home!

I had a bad experience with a local in Qatar and this is exactly what I did.

Qatari dude had taken over a changing room at the first gym I joined (the changing rooms are not locked and are only meant for changing). He'd left his thobe hanging in there and some stuff and ostensibly closed the door as he didn't want anyone else using it, but it didn't shut properly.

Comes along me looking for an empty changing room and I go in and see his stuff in there and back out, just in time for him to come into the locker room. He accused me of stealing from him. Well, hotel got involved, management said changing rooms aren't meant to be for sole use, there's lockers, etc. Man still claimed 1,000 QAR was missing and wanted to call the police. I sat there thinking my whole life was about to fall apart and I was to end up on the DM cover page then I remembered what Dubaiexile said. I just started apologising, and I offered to give him the 1,000 QAR just as a token of respect as I'd somehow clearly offended him etc cetera.

The Qatari man backed down. He was clearly a bully and the hotel went a long way in soothing it out. But good god for a hour or so there I thought the shit had really hit the fan. The Qatari dude took the money from me, but then a few minutes later he gave it back and gave me a warning finger

The hotel showered me with a lot of benefits as a compensation, so that helped. But it only illustrates that when you come across a local or any Arab and they're pissed off, pride or being right isn't worth it. Apologise, talk about understanding you accidentally offended their honour and respectability, apologise more, and leave it.
