Hhhhmmmm in UK 7-14 years for this Level 1 offence;
driving that involved a deliberate decision to ignore (or a flagrant disregard for) the rules of the road and an apparent disregard for the great danger being caused to others

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Every so often something like this happens out here and it really makes you struggle with your conscience and think about getting out. The Hummer incident a few years ago springs to mind.
People getting locked up for doing whatever in a taxi is one thing, but this is about an innocent man being killed and a family being left devasted, something they will never get over fully.
I can't see any changes for the better happening...at least in our time here.

A report on the radio today said that 200k blood money had to be paid, in that case if it was a Philipino I doubt he will have the money and will end up locked up until he can pay it. Still terrible ruling though.

I really don't know. It's depressing that when a local does something stupid, they get a very tolerant sentence, if that, whereas if a European is in a spot of local difficulty with someone from the so called Asian workforce, then they are, usually, blame-free too. The racism that is is not mentioned in the Gulf states makes a mockery of us all, because for the most part, it suits us to go along with the prevailing view of things, so long as we don't get picked up pissed on the way back from a brunch somewhere...

The WHO states you are five times more likely to die on the road in the GCC than you are in the UK/Europe. UK Judicial figures are a matter of public record, we can look up crimes and conviction rates. The UAE doesn't even have press transparency so there is actually no way to objectively compare.
Subjectively the UAE has lower street crime (hardly surprising given most foreigners are working and most locals are kept in luxury) but that doesn't make it safer.

Ignorance of facts I suspect.

Therefore, I'm sure we can all agree that Dubai is statistically, a safer place.

Oi.
A f**** Filipino?
We all know if it really was a Filipino he'd have been given life in prison/deportation or whatever. Not one lousy month. Especially for driving under influence (alcohol!) and killing someone.
Who writes these articles? Are we expected to believe the driver wasn't anything other than an influential Emirati with wasta?

A camel shepherd has been sentenced to six months in prison in the UAE after being found guilty of stealing bed sheets and kitchen utensils
