RIP

Terrible news. There can't have been that many cars around except the idiots driving home pissed from a night out.

False sense of security for cyclists heading out at 5.30 am on an empty Friday morning.

Very sad.

However, this statement is proof that many of us are capable of twisting rationality to the point of absurdity in justifying doing something we like:

“He probably did everything in his power to be safe,” said Stewart Howison, a friend and founder of CycleSafe Dubai.

CycleSafe. Dubai. Cycling on Dubai's roads. Mad.

Very sad.

Earlier reports mentioned the nationality of the driver, but not in this article...

Do we need a clue?

Given that they post pics (on their website but not the printed version) of the actual body of a suicide victim, a crashed bike and blood is quite tame in comparison

Roy was a fellow triathlete, friend, mentor and such an all round good guy who was loved by everyone. A top athlete, he never boasted or made anyone feel inadequate, quite the opposite. He actually opened our sport to everyone of all abilities.

I don't and won't get into a debate with you guys on road cycling right now. I'll save that one. But some of your comments need responding to when I'm not so raw with this one.

Yes, he was hit by an emirati who was drunk. He was hit from behind even though he had a safety car protecting his rear.

I hear the killer (because that is what he is) swerved around the safety car in an attempt to overtake and hit Roy and the other 2.

RIP my friend.

And bluecat, of course i would give a shit if the same happened to you. Don't mistake Internet banter for real human concern.

I know Stewart and the Group he founded and runs is called CycleSafe because his rides are only on the cycle tracks at Meydan and Al Qudra. I believe he is making reference to the fact they had a rear support car present to hopefully avoid any "accidents". This route is used every single Friday and has done for years.

I personally have cycled on the exact same route from safa out to NAS on hundreds of occasions with support vehicles, without any incident.

It's all another life risk assessment I guess. Yes it's potentially a dangerous pass time, but so are so many sports and activities that we do as a break from the mundane 9-5.

Would we be having this debate if the pissed driver swerved round the support car, mounted a pavement and took out a mother having an early morning stroll with her kids?

The problem here is drunk drivers, not cyclists on the roads.

And believe me, Roy knew what he was doing and the main focus of his Triathlon group was training and racing SAFE.

Commander, my heart goes out to you and the rest of the cycling community.

I used to work with a girl who was at the top of the sport in Dubai and once had the honour of going to NAS and Academic city to photograph them on a Friday morning in all of their glory. These guys are truly atheletes in the greatest sense of the word.

When I saw them riding they had support vehicles and I felt that they were taking as many precautions as possible so how someone managed to interfere and murder on of them (in my mind drunk driving is tantamount to planning to murder) is beyond me.

May god look after him and and his family. Dubai sinks to another low :-(
