Ive enjoyed the Olympics , it's been great but once Rooney and Co pull on the boots the velodrome will become a distant memory... |

I'd rather see someone else win the likes of Wimbledon because I don't think Murray is good enough. In fact, he isn't. His career is proof of that. Should he still be beaten up for that comment all those years ago and not supported or at least be acknowledged for his achievements? Totally true - he's always said that. And this year he's in 2 gold medal finals. I may dislike some, but not many. I really don't get in to that whole "I don't like him because he slept with his team mates wife" I don't really care. If he smashes in a 30 yard shot to win the World Cup great, I don't care who's backdoors he smashes in on his spare time. That's for OK! and Daily Mail readers to give a toss about. I'll stick to supporting great GB teams and players, now and in the future. Good point on Robson too. The other female player who is good was a touch bitter but such is. |

Interesting that, in the middle of all the 'Murray - love him or hate him?' stuff, we forget that he is a team member at the Olympics, not like at Wimbledon where he competes as an individual (at the Olympics, look at the mini-scoreboard in the top left hand corner of the TV screen - it's "GBR" not "Murray"). I support him like I support Ennis or Wiggins. Interesting comment about how he is helping Robson's career - hadn't thought about it that way, but I suppose it must be true, although I doubt if that crossed his mind pre-Games. In terms of tennis generally as an Olympic sport, one anomaly is that it's the only sport (I think) in which men and women compete against each other in a physical sense (i.e. in mixed doubles) which was supposedly contrary to the Olympic Charter (equestrian etc doesn't count as direct one-to-one physical competition). And I can certainly do without chavball at the Olympics. Handball though seems to be attracting quite a bit of general interest......... |

I hope this finally gives him the belief to go on and win a grand slam title. He has the game - has had for about 4 years now, he just lacks that psychological edge to win the big matches. Only Roger in his pomp has a bigger range of shots to play. But he beat Djoko and Roger, both in straight sets, to win this. Especially in the semi-final he showed excellent mental strength to just grab and hold the opportunities when they came. Today he never let Roger in the match once he got the edge. That kind of ruthlessness has been missing before where he always seemed just a couple of shots away from going to pieces (viz. Aus semi-final this year and final last year against Djoko). And he kept it up right to the end: after losing the first point when serving for the match (always so hard to do) he nailed three aces to finish it. A dominant performance from a true maestro.
On top of all that, his response to the idiotic question at Wimbledon about how it must have felt for his family watching him is my sports quote of the year: "I'm not that bothered. It was much harder for me." A real hero in one of the world's most popular sports - only in Britain would there be any doubters.... |
