no, al thani is the family name, it may also however be the tribes name but not necessarialy
ie khalifa bin zayed al nayan is khalifa son of zayed of the nayan family and bani yas tribe. most emiratis are of the bani yas tribe but there are other tribes in the uae. these tribes are then subdivided further, the bani yas originated in al ain/liwa and are the most dominant in terms of numbers and political power. these older tribal allegiancies are what causes a lot of the bickering between emirates, well that and money

which to be honest is probably closer to an accurate analysis of gcc politics than any academic study.
If you want a serious analysis I suggest a look at behavioural studies of 5 yr olds and what happens when someone else wants to play with their toys
