I can't help noticing all these rulers of the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar have the name Khalifa in their names, whether it's Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani or Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa or whatever. Can't be coincidence, or I'm just not paying enough attention.

Only really noticed when I read this piece about the lovely kinds of people invited to the Royal Wedding. The Bahrain fella isn't going now.

Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani means Hamad son of Khalifa of the Thani tribe, right?
I guess Khalifa is a popular name amongst Gulf Arabs of the Persian Gulf coast but them belonging to different tribes (Al Thani for Bahrain and Al Nahyan for Abu Dhabi) must mean they aren't immediately related but nonetheless the tribes would be related.

Khalifa also apparently means "successor" or "representative" so it a good name for the first born of a ruling family, I guess.

no, al thani is the family name, it may also however be the tribes name but not necessarialy
ie khalifa bin zayed al nayan is khalifa son of zayed of the nayan family and bani yas tribe. most emiratis are of the bani yas tribe but there are other tribes in the uae. these tribes are then subdivided further, the bani yas originated in al ain/liwa and are the most dominant in terms of numbers and political power. these older tribal allegiancies are what causes a lot of the bickering between emirates, well that and money
