I know a fair few expats who lived in Saudi.
A surprising number actually enjoyed their time. Compound life is apparently a lot of fun and it's a close community. Jeddah itself is on the Red Sea and has first rate diving/snorkeling.

Try it and see. A word of warning to those who have a partiality for strong liquor. A great deal of boozing goes on in the compounds and villas of Jeddah !

Virtually every compound I've lived on in Jeddah / Riyadh has its own brewer(s) of wine / liquor. Beer doesn't get too much of a look in, as the others are more profitable.

"I tried working but did not like it, so I went to Saudi Arabia." I do not think this applies to many of the TCN's but there are lots of Europeans out there who fit that paradigm perfectly. I was one of them before old age forced me into retirement.
